Welcome
insearchoflair.com came about after the Tokyo party. Between Andreas, Huang and Lin serenading us with their own special brand of karaoke, there was a lot of talk about keeping in contact and getting more organised. So, in July 2007, we fired up this site. The next step will be a secure forum in which we can post.
Interview
Andreas, our resident Viking, has been riding for three years. We caught up with him after this latest clip was recorded, while he was getting some much needed R&R.

How did you get into this gig?

How did any of us get into it? Through perseverance, I guess. Extreme sports have always been my thing; it was sky diving that introduced me to base jumping. After numerous jumps, there didn't seem much else left to do, then I heard rumours about Sandro and Marcelo.

So what did you do next?

Well, they're pretty tough customers to find. I finally caught up with them after several months, following their trail through Brazil, Uruguay and Peru. I think they thought I was mad, but they took me under their wing. Three weeks later, I had my first taste of riding.

Seeing Lair for PLAYSTATION®3 gives you a strong feeling of déjà vu. To a certain extent, this game mirrors what we do for real, although in an alternate, quasi-medieval world.

You use the new, motion sensing controller to soar through the skies of Lair, which sounds like a blessing compared to the reality of hanging on for dear life. We're at the mercy of the dragons we ride, while the game puts you in perfect harmony and control.

In terms of design, the beasts in this game are so close to the ones we've experienced, you can bet at least one of the game's creators is in the know, if not an actual rider.

Painted skins
Where did the idea come from? Simple. While in Thailand, we were holed up in Wat Bang Phra waiting to meet up with local Riders, when the annual tattoo festival kicked off.

Although the monks perform tattoo ceremonies every day, this is the big event of the year when thousands show up for protective Khemer Buddhist prayers and tattoo designs. Not wanting to miss the spectacle of spirit possessions, which some designs are famous for invoking, we went along for the ride.

Chaos is the only way to describe it. Under the baking sun, Thailand's faithful sweated, were inked and went insane. We saw several men taken by animal spirits, hurling themselves at friends and foes alike - one, tattooed from the neck down, bellowed and roared like a dragon.

Mythconceptions
Dragons are part of our culture. Every corner of the globe seems to have some myth or legend about them, from Ladon guarding the garden of Hesperides to the dragon who gnaws at the roots of Ygdrasil, most ancient tales.

Arguably one of the most well read accounts can be found in the Bible, in Job 41. Leviathan is described as having scales that could not be sundered and a breath of flame that kindled coals. The description, if religiously poetic, describes what many Riders have experienced. Could the ancient beast that inspired the passage have dwarfed the dragons of today?

Other myths appear to be far from the mark. In China, it is believed in the Yuen Kien Lei Han that dragons get their horns after 500 years and wings after 1,000 years. Yet, no Rider has ever seen a hornless dragon, and certainly not a wingless one. Marcelo managed to get near an occupied nest while Sandro distracted the mother. He said the lone baby dragon had wings and budding horns.
